Although some officials noted that using machines for farming in China costs more than traditional hand cultivation, the mechanization of farming in the village of Long Bow doubled the corn yield while the previous year's costs were cut in half.

a.
b. mechanization of farming in the village of LB doubled the corn yield while cutting costs to half those of the previous year
c. mechanization of farming in the village of LB doubled the corn yield as cost were cut to half of the previous year's
d. farming mechanization in the village of LB doubled the corn yield as it cut in half the previous year's costs
e. farming mechanization in the village of LB doubled the corn yield while costs were cut to half that of the previous year

OA is B. can someone please explain? I understand why C, D and E are wrong.

c. mechanization of farming in the village of LB doubled the corn yield as cost were cut to half of the previous year's
"cost" is singular, "were" plural verb
d. farming mechanization in the village of LB doubled the corn yield as it cut in half the previous year's costs
"as it cut" awkward
e. farming mechanization in the village of LB doubled the corn yield while costs were cut to half that of the previous year
farming did not have an effect on the corn yield, the mechanization did[/u]

So A is wrong because its in passive.

therefore it is B.

I think use of while is required here to complete the comparison.
So narrowed the choices to B and E.

E:while costs were cut to half that of is awkward and wordy. Also I think those is required here to refer to "costs"

B: "while cutting costs to half of those" is much better

cut in half is unidiomatic, so A & D can be eliminated. Eliminate E, Costs is plural and "those" should be used to compare costs. C can be eliminated as "were cut" (plural) is not the right verb for cost (singular).

Between "A" and "B" check for parallelism, you will get the answer :)
using - cutting
So my vote for "B"
C,D,E well explained above.

Cheers!!

b/w A and B, I will go for B. I rule out A because its passive.
B feels naturally parallel too, but I can't tell why?

Expert's post
When you say costs (plural) then you have say half of those and not half of that. That is why E is wrong

I get your point on why E is wrong but then shouldn't cultivation refer to farming mechanization instead of mechanization?
