I prefer D too. we need a clause after although not a pharse.

Although the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, measures to control it are necessary only in the South.

(A) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, control of them is
(B) widely distributed, measures to control the lesser cornstalk borer are
(C) widely distributed, lesser cornstalk borer control is
(D) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, measures to control it are
(E) it is widely distributed, control of the lesser cornstalk borer is

Why is E wrong? It has the DC, IC structure. Doesnt D change the meaning of the sentence? How are we to know that "measures" are needed [as opposed to just "control"]? The "It" in AC E isnt ambiguous because it can only refer to lesser cornstalk borer.

E is wrong because it sounds like "it" refers to "control of the lesser corn stalk borer" when "it" should refer to "the lesser cornstalk borer".

I wud pick D here 'coz :

A : tense Problem

B : Problem with modifier.

C : Though the modifier used is apt, the meaning is not conveyed aptly. had it been 'lesser cornstalk borer's control is ' , it shud have sounded correct.

E : pronoun reference is improper.

So, D shud be the answer.

Suggestions/comments invited.

Yes D it is.

In A, ' them ' is wrong.
In B, it sounds as if the measures are widely distributed.
In C, same problem as B.
In E, the referrent of ' it ' is wrong.It should be referring to ' lesser cornstalk borer ' and not ' control of the lesser cornstalk borer '

(A) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, control of them is
----> "them" has no antecedent --> out
(B) widely distributed, measures to control the lesser cornstalk borer are
---> what is "widely distributed" is "cornstalk borer" , not "measures to control" --> out
(C) widely distributed, lesser cornstalk borer control is
---> same problem to B
(D) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, measures to control it are
--> fine
(E) it is widely distributed, control of the lesser cornstalk borer is
---> same problem to B.

D it is.

I would go with 'C', more precise

C modifies the "control", which cannot be "distributed."

(D) looks like the clear winner.

D --

(A) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, control of them is - them is plural so incorrect

(B) widely distributed, measures to control the lesser cornstalk borer are - "widely distributed" wrongly modifies "measures"

(C) widely distributed, lesser cornstalk borer control is -
"widely distributed" correctly modifies "measures" , but "esser cornstalk borer control" is awkward

(D) the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, measures to control it are - correct

(E) it is widely distributed, control of the lesser cornstalk borer is - what does "it" refer to ???

I would go with D

A. them - pronoun is referring to - lesser cornstalk borer which is singular.
B. The first phrase is describing - (measures to control ) rather than corn stock borer.
C. The first phrase is describing - (lesser cornstalk borer control ) rather than corn stock borer.
D. Correct.
E. First Phrase is describing Control

A -> say it's controlling the plant itself, and not measures to control its distribution
B -> says distribution control is widely distributed
C -> same as B
E -> 'it' has no precedent

D is best.

Will go with D

C is the closest as lesser cornstalk borer clearly modifies, but I didnt like the overall construction of the sentence. Rest all have modifier problem.
