A seems Ok, the other choices don't seem to be correct.

'A' according to me..because Europians cannot be compared with 'believes' which is so in D.
However A compares "Europians' with 'no one'.

I would keep A, it seems to be the right answer. There is no ambiguity, "they" can not refer to no one, it refers to unicorns, clearly. Try to find another noun and you'll see, there isnt one that makes sense.
My daughter believed that Santa actually existed, but today she knows that he is not real. It is clear that he refers to Santa. And even if A can be disputed, I would eliminate D just b/c of poor construction--"This believe is today held by no one"? This believe is tomorrow, next week, few months from now? Think about it. Also, held by no one is passive.

The nearest plural noun is "unicorns". Therefore, "they" is not ambiguous.

Looking for an explanation as to why (E) would be eliminated. Anyone please?

The only reason I can come up with, outside of the fact that They are not believed by is passive, is They are not believed by could mean that noone believes them. No one believes the unicorns? Unicorns are not doing anything for us either to believe or not to believe them. Hope that makes sense
