Am I being too ambitious [#permalink]
21 Jan 2010, 08:31
2.5 yrs work exp/ 700 GMAT/ 111 IBT/ IIT ( 8.38/10) / Managerial role ( Unilever , sales & marketing), currently own venture/ good co-curricular & leadership roles
R1 ( dinged in Yale, Columbia & Emory) R1 ( Duke interviewd and waitlisted) R1 ( Cornell pending)
Applied to HBS & Kelloggs ( R2) ( thought its a black hole & hence might help)
Could somebody throw some light?
Thanks

if i had to guess, it would be your GMAT score relative to your demographic "pot". IIT are notorious for having super high GMAT scores (even a 750 would be considered "average"). remember, a lot of times you're competing against people from your same race / background in addition to people from your industry. how were your verbal and AWA scores? was your GMAT tilted heavily towards the Q side? that could also indicate that there might be an inherent weakness in your essays.

Thanks Not enough info. Could be the 2.5 years work exp, the essays, or something else. My guess, because you only got one interview in R1, the essays or the work experience.

My work experience includes stints in sales, brands, rural , international etc. during training In my role I handled the turnover of an entire state and had 15 direct and over 200 indirect reportees..leadership role...and stuff...got couple of awards.. Ventured into new venture..moderate success..more in terms of publicity..less in terms of cash.. expecting a VC...partnered with big sporting bodies..

Not to add salt to the wound but it seems like you should have received more than 1 interview invite. Adcoms, who knows their logic?

It is tilted heavily towards Q (50), but I thought my Toefl score will offset it. Didnt have the enthu to write GMAT again. My AWA score is 5.

Thanks I'm guessing essays may be the problem here. GMAT not especially competitive in your pool of IIT but role in Unilever is unique and uncommon in that demographic as well.

Thanks there!!
I got an Interview from Kellogg( R2), ( I guess by the time R2 arrived I have had enough experience of writing essays and hence they are coming off better).
Or maybe I got an interview coz Kelloggs want to interview as many applicants as possible ( in that case no reason to rejoice..
