Are we expected to know sqrt of non-perfect squares?

I'm doing a MGMAT problem which required me to have knowledge of what \(sqrt2\) and \(sqrt3\) is. I can generally estimate but didn't know that they were ~1.7 and ~1.4. When I generally estimated I could make an educated guess but the problem is that the answer choices were so close that it was hard to guess.

Basically I needed to be able to estimate

\(\frac{sqrt3-sqrt2}{1}\)

Answers had 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40% as choices.

Hi Cares,

You may remember the following square roots:
\sqrt{2}=1.41
\sqrt{3}=1.73
\sqrt{5}=2.24
\sqrt{6}=2.45
\sqrt{7}=2.65
\sqrt{8}=2.83
\sqrt{10}=3.16,

but I believe that in GMAT there won't be any questions requiring the decimal values of square roots. Also, there are no close enough choices in GMAT.

For GMAT it's good to memorize following values:
\(\sqrt{2}\approx{1.41}\)
\(\sqrt{3}\approx{1.73}\)
\(\sqrt{5}\approx{2.24}\)
\(\sqrt{6}\approx{2.45}\)
\(\sqrt{7}\approx{2.65}\)
\(\sqrt{8}\approx{2.83}\)
\(\sqrt{10}\approx{3.16}\)

Hope it helps.
