I took my GMAT in mid Aug and I spent the last couple of weeks researching schools, making a resume and talking to some admission consultants. My original plan was 2 schools in R1 and 4 in R2. Am I too late? I've not started on the essays yet.

You're definitely not too late but you'll have to work hard in the next couple of weeks. I don't know what schools you thought of for R1, but some have a R1 deadline as late as November. Good luck!

Your definitely not too late but it will be a lot of work--especially for your first application.

It took me ~100hrs to complete my first app and then half that time for my 2nd application. If I was in a crunch I could have no doubt done it in less time but I may have sacrificed some quality.

I would urge you to make up your mind soon though, as you'll want to prep your recommenders and give them enough time to do their thing.
