(B) stems from an excess of certain micro nutrients—compounds that are also found in rainwater, soil, and liquid mineral supplements, and they
(C)stem from an excess of certain micro nutrients—compounds also found in rainwater, soil, and liquid mineral supplements, and

Although, according to several studies, the costs of treating acute otitis media (AOM) episodes amounts to a sum higher than 2 percent of the estimated $3 billion the nation spent on illness last year, doctors say that these costs can be mitigated if parents take preventative measures for their children.

(A) amounts to a sum higher
(B) amounts to greater
(C) amounted to greater
(D) amounted to higher
(E) amounted to a higher sum -- IMO correct

OA please

a higher sum in E is wrong as both of them have same meaning and it makes the sentence redundant & wordy so E can't be right. Also as far as C & D are concerned greater than is a correct idiom so C is the best choice.
