9. Among the more effective kinds of publicity that publishers can
get for a new book is to have excerpts of it published in a high-
circulation magazine soon before the book is published. The
benefits of such excerption include not only a sure increase in sales but
also a fee paid by the magazine to the book's publisher.

Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information above?

(A) The number of people for whom seeing an excerpt of a book in a
is smaller than the number for whom the excerpt stimulates a desire

(B) Because the financial advantage of excerpting a new book in a
magazine usually accrues to the book's publisher, magazine editors
are unwilling to publish excerpts from new books.

(C) In calculating the total number of copies that a book has sold,
Publishers include sales of copies of magazines that featured an
excerpt of the book.

(D) The effectiveness of having excerpts of a book published in a
magazine, measured in terms of increased sales of a book, is
proportional to the circulation of the magazine in which the
excerpts are published.

(E) Books that are suitable for excerpting in high circulation
magazines sell more copies than books that are not suitable for
excerpting.

I think it's D.
Here's my thoughts:
A) imo it's an assumption rather then a conclusion;
B) too strong; We should not bring such an unwarranted conclusion based on the info provided;
C) it could be so, but we can not be sure. Not enough evidence;
D) here's the direct connection with cause&result, which is implied in the argument;
E) I thought about it. It is also correct, but I eliminated it since it introduces new qualifier <not suitable>. Anyway, E could be correct, but D imo is better;

It is clear that sales will increase only when A is true.
vaka, assumption is always supported by the passage and in my opinion assumption is an implicit conclusion. .
All other choices need to be stretched.

Vicky, look,
assumption is not a an implicit conclusion, it is a part of argument, it's a missing link, nothing more. It's an inference that is an implied conclusion. You said it yourself - the argument is not valid if A is not true. That's right, but we are asked about conclusion. I may be wrong in my aswer choise but only for the reason that I was looking for what they asked - conclusion.

Val,

We say too much in choice D
Sales of Book proportional to the circulation of the magazine..
lets use some formal logic here
according to D...If high circulation, then high sales
BUT
if not high circulation, then may or may not be high sales..
BUT according to D.. if not high circulation magazine, the sales wont be high...thats saying too much..dont u think?

Choice A is best. A says ONE of the reasons of high sales is me.

Good enough?

Thanks

I would rather go with D instead of A.

It was between A and D for me, I went with D.

Is A the official answer? D seems to be better. Why did the passage mentione "high circulation magazine"? Seems to me, it implies that if the excerpt is published in a "low circulation" magazine then we wouldn't see the kind of sales in high circulation magazine.

Praetorian, believe your answer is based on Akamai's lessons of formal logic? Right? I have to study it carefully.
