An airplane took off from airport P and later landed at airport R at the same time that another airplane landed at airport R, completing its flight from airport Q. If both flights were nonstop flights, which airplane flew at the faster average speed?

(1) The first plane took off a half hour before the second plane.

(2) The distance from P to R is greater than the distance from Q to R.

You have to assume that the planes flew in a straight line, at the same altitude, ascended and descended at the same vector, etc.

I don't know if GMAT expects to assume that all these are equal.

(1.) We don't know either distance to point R, therefore let's examine the possibilities:

Plane 1 could have traveled for 2.5 hours over a distance of 10 miles

r=d/t
r=10/2.5
r=4 miles per hour

while plane 2 could have traveled for 2 hours over a distance of 20 miles

r=d/t
r=20/2
r-10 miles per hour

or plane 2 could have traveled for 2 hours over a distance of 4 miles

r=d/t
r-4/2
r-2 miles per hour

(2) The distance doesn't say anything about speed. Plane 1 & 2 could travel at an infinite difference speeds to reach R at the same time.

Answer is either C or E.

I believe the answer is E. b/c we don't know if the plane that left 1st also traveled over more land.
