If X is 14000 BTU, then X+3 is for 8000 BTU
465 X + 235(X+3) = 3495
X = 558/140 ~ 4....weird
X + 3 ~ 7.....weird

i got that question on one of the ARCO gmat tests and couldnt figure it out for the life of me. i was solving it the same way as everyone else too. now I feel a lot better about that one. you can try and back solve it and it won't come out either.
Answer C would be 235(6) + 465(3)= 2805
Answer D wont work bc you cant get a difference of 3 b/w the 2
9+3=12 (difference is 6)
8+4=12 (difference is 4)
7+5=12 (difference is 2)
Answer E would be 235(8)+465(5)=4205

This problem is from Peterson Master the GMAT 2005 software. So far I faced 2 problems with wrong answer choices or typo already. This is one of them.

Well 235x + 465(x-3) = 3495
x = no. of 8000 BTU m/c sold
=>700x =4890
=> x ~ 7

Answer is (C), question needs to be changed to "the store sold 3 less of the 8,000 BTU models than 14,000 BTU models".
