happening as an adolescent
happening as adolescents
that happened as they were adolescents
that happened when they were adolescents
that had happened when adolescents

Hi, I found this correct answer awkward. I want to know what makes wrong choices wrong, please.

A. An embarrassment happening as an adolescent -- meaning error. better version : An embarrassment happening at adolescent...
B. same error as in A.
C. "As they were" is setting hypothetical context, but sentence is talking about an actual past phase.
D. No error in this case.
E. had is not right, further when adolescents is also not fine.. bcz removal of had wont save this sentence.
e.g. An embarrassment that happened when adolescents often prevents otherwise well-adjusted adults from feeling comfortable speaking in public. overall meaning changed..
