An independent audit found no indication of tax avoidance on the part of the firm in the firm’s accounts, therefore no such problem exists.

My answer E.
If X did not happen , then Y did not happen.
X = no indication of tax avoidance on the part of the firm in the firm’s accounts
Y = therefore no such problem exists.
For choice E,
X = An examination of the index of the book found no listing for the most prominent critic of the theory the book advocates
Y = therefore, the book fails to refer to that critic.
In choice A, it is predicting the future.
B, C, and E goes beyond what could be found in the argument.

What is wrong with (C)? Both (C) and (E) are close.

The way I see it -- the flaw in the reasoning of the original statement is : The firm could have altered the accounts. The independent audit could have overlooked something.
E comes closest -- The index of the book could have made a mistake (equivalent to altered accounts) and the examination itself could have been faulty (equivalent to the audit)

The problem with C is that the compilation includes essays of best students but the generalization is about students and not best students.
SO the essays that were reviewed were not all-inclusive.
I think this gap in reasoning is different from the one in the original statement

Please explain your answers.
A: nothing about future events in the first argument
B: IF anything this is the next best choice in my opinion, but its still way off.
C: this is way off. Students have become apathetic... not close to the original.
D: again way off as C is.
E: best. Since A is not in B, therefore B does not refer to A. Very similar to the original argument.
