Anne owes Bob $4, Bob owes Carol $3, and Carol owes Anne $5. If Carol settles all the debts by giving money to both Anne and Bob, how much will she give Anne?

hmm.... is the question correct? i mean carol gives money to Bob?

the possibility is that negative giving means taking from Bob.

Carol owes Anne so she'll "help" Anne pay Bob ...instead of 4 as the debt, she pays Bob only 1 coz Bob owes her 3.
still does Carol have to pay Anne 1.
