Another original thread about admission chances [#permalink] New post 29 Apr 2014, 13:03
Hey there!

Of course, ANOTHER thread about chances to get admitted in the stratosphere of the MBA world. It's a long post but please take the time.

I'm looking to get into HBS or Sloan, and I will apply to the uToronto program also. I will apply to 2 lesser quality program in Quebec as a backup measure. I might consider another top program in the US for good measure, but it's got to be on the East coast and all. I'm thinking Chicago maybe, but it's not relevent once you shoot for HBS.

I come from Quebec, speak French ( bien sûr ) and pretty decent english too. I went to an english school for our equivalent of your end of high school and beginning of undergrad - the infamous CEGEP system. I speak a little of spanish too, but it's not a lot.

First, the raw data. I'm graduating in winter 2015 in Political science at Laval university with an estimate GPA of around 3.2. I just did a first ''dry run'' of the GMAT and got 600, but I didn't study anything before. I was rusty in the Quant section and felt like a dumbass all the way through. I got 37 perc in IR (lol I know...), 40% in Quant and 81% in verbal. These are pretty pathetic numbers and I'll study my ass off to get around 720. I use Veritas and I feel it's gonna help a lot. I feel this is gonna be tough but I think I got a shot to this score realistically, but not much more.

About me, as I said I'm 28 and a business owner since I was 22. My story is not exceptional, I didn't fight cancer or go to Iraq in the SEALs. Basically, I got into business around 17-18 years old, running in part my mom's kindergarten. I did some management stuff at my dad's hotel too. Then we bought 2 restaurants that I ran solo from 2008 until now. We sold one along the way and came close to bankruptcy. I did my degree full time while managing the restaurants. I run the board of a small non-profit in Quebec and I'm treasurer on another one. I do some business coaching for people around me as a hobby. There are others things too, but you get the picture. I feel all this is a strength, but since it's only small businesses and stuff, I'm not sure if it could be viewed positively or not. I know my restaurant is far away from Goldman, but at the same time I'm the image you get of the young and ambitious entrepreneur.

My main weapon is my personnality and wit. I'm not the smartest around and I know it. However, I've reflected a lot about life and myself in the last years and came to a level of leadership and charisma that many people around me find unique. I'm not here to brag or anything, this forum is full of awesome people, but I just want to highlight that I ace every interview I ever get into. People find me smart, witty and sharp in general. I would write what I think a solid essay, being a columnist in a local online paper since 2012. I will use originality and humour in the essay and try to standout while not making a full clown of myself.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. What do you think are my chances of getting into these programs? My sister did a master in law at Harvard and I (obviously) felt in love with the place. Please tell me that if I work like a mofo, I could have a realistic shot! If you don't, I will like you anyway, but a bit less.

Thanks!

David
