Hi! I'm interested in PhD in International Business or strategic management (international applicant). My research interests are: M&A; FDI and choice of foreign market entry strategy; how does a company deal with such problems as poor legislation or corruption in another country.

BA in Economics (university is considered the best in the country (Russia)), gpa 3.5
MA in International economics, same uni, gpa 3.7

Econ courses (most quant oriented): micro I, II and III (grades B,A,A), macro I, II, III (grades B,B,A), international economics (A).
Math courses: calculus I (B), linear algebra (C  ), statistics (A), probability and statistics (A), game theory (not graded, pass), econometrics (I, II and additional course during masters – grades A, pass, B), operations research (pass).

TOEFL IBT: 110
GMAT: 710 (q45, v42) – first attempt, I know that q score is low, but I'm really not sure I can get it any higher.

Research experience: zero, apart from BA and MA papers (both are about M&A)
Work experience: about 2.5 years (financial analyst), not too much related to phd I'm afraid.

My biggest worries so far are gmat quant score (is it too low to be considered for phd?) and a few poor grades. I'm actually beginning to doubt that I have any chance at all.

I tried to find a match for my research interests among the faculty. Should I aim lower (or at all)? List of schools:

Georgia state
University of SC (Moore)
University of Kansas
Rutgers
Old Dominion
University of Connecticut (Storrs)
Haskayne school of business
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee
Syracuse University (Whitman)
The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business

Thanks in advance.

Serl :)

As long as you have time, there is a hope that you can improve your application. My situation is following: I come from Poland. I graduated from one of the best business schools in the country. My GMAT is 700 (Q 48; V37). I don't have much working experience, but I am currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at my university and I teach as well. My goal is Ph.D. in business economics with focus on international corporate finance at one of the best business schools in U.S.A.. I am retaking GMAT. However, GMAT is not the only factor of successful application. I am working on improving my international experience. I consider also taking additional courses.

Best,
M
