(+)comb of overwork & stress -> insomnia
At H: all managers suffer from stress
majority of mgrs work > 60 hrs/week & other mgrs work < 40 hrs/week
H: gives buns to who work > 40hrs/week

Any combination of overwork and stress inevitably leads of insomnia. Managers at HiCorp, Inc., all suffer from stress. HiCorp gives regular bonuses only to employees who work more than 40 hours per week.

Which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by the statements above?

(A) Managers at HiCorp work under conditions that are more stressful than the conditions under which managers at most other companies work.
>> No information about other companies is given.
(B) Most of the employee bonuses given by HiCorp are given to managers.
>> We cant be 100% sure , nothing about other employees is given to us
(C) At HiCorp, insomnia is more widespread among managers than among any other group of employees.
>> same issue as B.
(D) No manager at HiCorp who works only 40 hours per week suffers from overwork.
>> Extreme to say "No manager"
(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.

D is wrong Because the statement does not explicitly define overwork.
my pick. E

It is a conclusion type question not strengthen type. Hence we should avoid straying away from the argument.
In that Case i feel that option B is the correct answer as the option says that " Most managers recieve overtime payment " which is in conjunction with the argument.

Pls post OA and OE

E... and why is it that OPs don't post the answer immediately? They certainly are given the option to do so before submitting their question.

Yes the correct answer is E. The condition for Overwork is not explicitly stated.

Hence, the correct answer is E.

E.

(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.
Passage states Majority of managers work over 60 hours. HiCorp give regular bonus to employees who work more than 40 hours of week.

Argument states that, managers who work more than 40 hours per week receive bonuses.
Insomnia is a combination of stress and overwork. Though argument states that all managers suffer from stress, argument does not explicitly suggests that working more than 40 hours per week is actually overwork.
So, we can not strongly infer that managers receive bonus have insomnia.

Experts please explain why E is correct answer.

If we pick this apart carefully, we can see that there are only two categories of manager:

1) Those who work 40 hours (the stated norm) or fewer
2) Those who work more than 60 hours, against their doctor's recommendation

The author never states explicitly that these managers are overworked, but it seems reasonable to say that someone who is working at least 50% more than the stated norm and who has been told to work less by a doctor is working too much!

Yes, it seems reasonable. Since argument did not mention the criteria about overwork explicitly, I had this doubt.
Thanks for the reply.

Overwork + stress --> Insomnia
All managers and HC are stressed.
A majority work work well over 60 hours per week (despite doctors' warnings against it). So seems that this majority overworks too.
Normal working hours are 40 hrs/week (so looks like well over 60 hrs is certainly overwork)
Working more than 40 hrs is necessary for bonus.

Which of the following is most strongly supported by the statements?

(A) Managers at HiCorp work under conditions that are more stressful than the conditions under which managers at most other companies work.

Not given. All we know is that managers at HC are stressed. Are they more stressed than other managers, we can't say.

(B) Most of the employee bonuses given by HiCorp are given to managers.

Not necessary. Many other employees could be working for more than 40 hrs too and many of them may be getting bonuses.

(C) At HiCorp, insomnia is more widespread among managers than among any other group of employees.

Again, other employees could be stressed and overworked too. Also, there could be other reasons for insomnia too.

(D) No manager at HiCorp who works only 40 hours per week suffers from overwork.

Not necessary. A manager at HC working 40 hrs could be working at home or could be working at HC for 4 days but somewhere else for 2 etc. Or 40 hrs could be too much for someone. There are many reasons why a manager working at HC for 40 hrs could be overworked.

(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.

Correct. All managers are stressed. All those who receive bonuses work for more than 40 hrs (so are likely overworked). Most managers work for 60+ hrs. Hence, it is reasonable to say that most managers who receive bonuses have insomnia.

There are a couple of issues with (D).

First, notice that the passage doesn't explicitly define "overwork." Is it just dependent on the number of hours worked, or are there other factors involved? And do these managers who work 40 hours per week have second jobs on top of their 40 hour workweeks? We simply don't know, so we can't say that NONE of these 40 hr/week managers suffer from overwork.

Additionally, the question doesn't just ask for the inference that's best supported by the passage -- it asks for a CONCLUSION that's best supported. (E) fits the bill much better than (D), because (E) builds off of the different supporting points to reach a culminating conclusion.

I hope that helps!

Best Explanation BY FAR. :)
Although I didn't choose D. I chose C. :P But wrong nonetheless.
Many so called "Experts" just make stuff up to match the answer choice but not you. :P Thank you for that. :)
