Hi Guys...

heres the situation..I was never too inclined to do an MBA...had a typical engineering
mindset..envisioned myself writing code for the rest of my life...until i started reading more about
MBA..

Now I have reached a point where I am really keen on doing an MBA..but I am not sure on how to
increase my chances of getting into one...

my current profile is as follows:
Under-grad --Electronics and Telecom (India)
Grad school--Electrical Engineering (University of Houston, Houston TX)
Work Ex: Telecom Startup in Dallas for 3.5 years.
Currently working as a software engineer in India..(Had to move back home for personal reasons)

GMAT schore--650.

I am sure this is as vanilla flavored an application as can be.. an average GMAT score...and neither
do I have any life changing experiences like 'Ben Campbell' from the movie 21...

when I compare my profile with a few ppl who have been accepted into good schools..I can see that
the odds are completely stacked up against me...

A few things that I am trying at this point in time is
start writing a few generic essays on why I want to do an MBA....which school and stuff..just so
that I can refine it over time..

what are a few other things that I can do now to increase my chances of getting into a decently
ranked B-school?

Volunteer for some kind of really different organization. Something strange or something that you'd normally never think of doing. Not only will this create a differentiating point on your CV, it'll show that you're willing to move out of your comfort zone and experience new things and new people. And who knows what kind of network effects that'll have.

Another easier-said-than-done one is to figure out exactly what you want to do. Having a laser beam focus on some objective will set you apart and give you a goal to move towards. Often you won't know what this is until you get your feet wet in some aspect of it, so maybe the first suggestion is better starting place.

Good luck!
