we need in this case a object for our action (we shoud answear the question: What we do need?,.........) so this mean that the correct answear should be between A,C and E then now:

A "that there is one"... clearly refer to a condition so we do have correct parallelism in this case and is the correct answear
C "indicate that it is present" has no clear antecedent so is out we cannot clearly see the antecedent of that
E as stated the test should detect a condition not his presence..... keep as always things simple...... so also this question is out......

seems to me that the winner in this case is A

I just got yesterday grammar smart of PR II edition is an amazing bookI just went throught the material once I hope to know it by heart in a couple of days.....

Yep C.

A) 'there is one' is not clear.
B) 'detect the presence of...' is better than 'detect when xxx is present'
C) Should be it.
D) Same as B.
E) Too wordy...

"one" in A and B has an unclear referent.

Bagging (C) here.

so for you is clearer ""that it is present" referring back to condition...... can someone clarify please even in a one seems to refer back to condition that is the object of our action.....
