I'm wondering what the proper procedure for this would be. Should they submit them in their native language, and then get them translated?

Since it's a quite common case in Russia that a recommender does not speak any other language than Russian, this question is asked at EVERY MBA info session :-D
The answer is always "it's not an issue. Have it translated in English, and then submit"
However, I think that it will generally weaken your app because such a recomendator will not be able to talk to AdCom if necessary.

Thanks Helg, that helps a lot.

Actually, I do not know if schools contact recommenders to get more information from them. I can imagine that they would call to verify references, but I don't know about getting additional information. Most schools I have spoked with are aware that doing 4-5 recommendations takes a lot of effort and they try to make it as painless as possible.

it is not a common practice, that AdCom calls a recommendator, I agree, but I would not completely exclude this possibility either

Just checked my GSB application...

Recommendations Verified by Office Yes

I will find out if they called, emailed or what.

Mine has the same status and I'm sure nobody called my recommendators.
