m+n=5
We have all together:
4+x=1--->x=-3
4+y=-5---->y=-9
f+x=2--->f=5
e+x=7---->e=10
e+y=n---> n= 1
f+z=5---->z=0
4+z=m-----> m=4
Thus, m+n=5
C it is.

I think the question means that you add the column and row to get the value of the intersection of this row and column.

Agree I got (c)

m + n = 4 + z + y + e

rearrange

4+y + z+e

from the chart this equals

-5 + 10 = 5

I did by solving the equations, like laxieqv. I did my usual mistake as

x + 4 = 1 as x = 5 instead of x = -3. Surprisingly, I got the answer.

By having x = 5; I got
e = 2
y = -9 (no dependency)
n = -7
z = 8
m = 12

m + n = 5 :-)

bsmith75's answer was a smart one.

PS: This post was answered in GMATYahooGroups also.

fresinha12: Could you please tell which software it is?

Agree with C.

Anyway, there is an error in the stem: f+y=4 not -4 as it says...
