Application volume comparison for elites [#permalink]
31 Dec 2006, 03:45
Ok, same as the other post, but this time for the elites.
Class of '09
1. Dartmouth 127
1. Berkeley 127
3. Duke 121
4. Michigan 117
5. Virginia 105
6. Cornell 89
7. Yale 82
8. UCLA 80
9. NYU 72
Class of '08
1. Berkeley 198
2. Duke 176
3. Dartmouth 174
4. Michigan 153
5. NYU 150
6. Yale 144
7. UCLA 125
8. Cornell 105
9. Virginia 85
My first thought is that there might not be enough data to draw any conclusions, but what the hell. There really seems to be a tremendous amount of consistency year over year in terms of how schools compare to one another. It seems the only big changes are that Cornell and Virginia have really experienced comparative increases in volume. This might be due to different deadlines, or perhaps more people are adding them as back-ups because they have been easier to get into recently.
Volume seems to be more or less a dead heat between Berkeley, Dartmouth, Duke & Michigan, but Berkeley and Dartmouth have much smaller class sizes.

Off the top of my head UVA, Cornell, Tuck, and Hass have R2 deadlines that have already passed. Duke and Michigan are still coming up. Perhaps it'll be easier to draw conclusions after Jan 10.

I am not sure if we can draw any conclusions with this. We have to consider that admissions411.com got more famous this year too, which led to more people updating their data on the website.

I did a similiar comparison. peilu it's better to compare by rounds now than total number of applicants. Take Chicago for example, a week before they released R1 decisions, they had less than 100 apps for R1, after the Dec 23, the volumne shot up to over 130. Since R1 is now complete for most schools, comparing only R1 apps volume is a better predictor of eventual app volume.

I would still not agree that we can compare, because we are forgetting to include an important attribute - maybe admissions411 got more known this year than last year. We are still playing with uncertaintities.
