applications asking where else you are applying [#permalink]
20 Dec 2006, 22:17
Has anyone else run across this? I'm filling out applications for round 2 at LBS and found this question a little strange. I assume it's more for the school's data than anything else. Anyone know if it's standard practice elsewhere? Does it look bad if you leave this part blank (which could inaccurately imply that an applicant is only applying to one school...?)

I think this questions will also look for whether you are looking for something specific while applying to schools or generally applying to any school. Many interviewers too ask this question...

I think it's best to leave it blank. If they ask you in the interview, then you could tell them.
Don't only list the similar rankings. You have to look at what you talk about in your essays.

read something somewhere on this topic that went like this:
if you are applying to mit, harvard and boston college, BC is going to think you aren't into them and are only choosing them as a back-up. Letting you in will lower their enrollment rate.
Harvard is going to think you don't have the confidence to be HBS material.
I think the whole question is sincerely uncool.

Hence my advice to select two similarly ranked schools.

I was recently asked this question during an interview at a school's info session.
A few minutes later, it was funny to see the interviewer stumped to respond to "What are your thoughts about the other schools I'm applying to?"

I answered this question honestly: Wharton and MIT. Seems it didn't have any impact on my decision as I was admitted to LBS.

Even if you aren't applying to two similarly ranked schools? What if you get caught lying?
In my situation, I am applying to three schools around the top 20-30, and one school in the 10-15 range with a prestigious name, aka my "reach" school. I'm nervous that the reach school will see that they are the highest ranked school on my list, and will consciously or subconsciously think less of me as an applicant.
