Applying to Part-Time MBA Programs : Advice Needed [#permalink] New post 08 Nov 2006, 08:31
Hi everyone! I am new to this forum but was hoping to get some insight from those of you who are willing to offer some. I was initially planning on applying to full-time MBA programs since I had lost my job last summer and felt that I needed an MBA to transition from an operations role in asset management to an analyst/portfolio manager role. However, I was offered the incredible opportunity to join a small investment firm as a portfolio manager asst. which was exactly what I have been looking for. Since I don't want to give up on my dream to get an MBA, I have decided to pursue a Part Time program in the Boston area. Having compared my stats with the stats of the incoming Fall 2006 classes for Boston College and Boston University, I believe I would be competitive for the PT programs for 2007. See below:

I have a 2.72 GPA for my undergrad (due primarily to being a Biochemistry major for 2 years at Boston College prior to switching to Political Science. MY GPA was in the mid 3's after that).

I scored an unimpressive 600 on my GMAT. I have been told by admissions consultants that I should retake the test since it can only help. Is it really necessary?

My work experience is solid - 6+ years at a top investment firm (Deutsche Bank holding the totle of AVP).

Significant travel and exposure to foreign culture (lived overseas in Germany for 6 years, England for 3 years, traveled extensively throughout Europe, lived for a month in India for work).

I would appreciate your thoughts on my applications to BC and BU and if you feel I would really need to retake the GMAT.

I had a pretty negative experience with a consultant from AdmissionsConsulting where I was told that I lacked a concrete plan (despite only speaking with me for 15 minutes and cutting me off repeatedly. Definitely not worth the $150). He had very little to offer other than telling me over and over to retake the test. I am currently preparing for the CFA and don't really have the time to study for both.

Thanks for your help!

Hi!

I would retake the GMAT especially if you have only taken it once thus far. Getting the score into the 650+ range would improve your candidacy considerably. The extra effort and time is definately worth it. Good luck!
