Archaeologist: A skeleton of a North American mastodon that [#permalink]

5. Archaeologist: A skeleton of a North American mastodon that became extinct at the peak of the Ice Age was recently discovered. It contains a human-made projectile dissimilar to any found in that part of Eurasia closest to North America. Thus, since Eurasians did not settle in North America until shortly before the peak of the Ice Age, the first Eurasian settlers in North America probably came from a more distant part of Eurasia. Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the archaeologist’s argument? (A) The projectile found in the mastodon does not resemble any that were used in Eurasia before or during the Ice Age. (B) The people who occupied the Eurasian area closest to North America remained nomadic throughout the Ice Age. (C) The skeleton of a bear from the same place and time as the mastodon skeleton contains a similar projectile. (D) Other North American artifacts from the peak of the Ice Age are similar to ones from the same time found in more distant parts of Eurasia. (E) Climatic conditions in North America just before the Ice Age were more conducive to human habitation than were those in the part of Eurasia closest to North America at that time.

Powerscore LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible... I use them because they are much harder than normal ones... care to explain your reasoning?

Premises 1) A skeleton of a North American mastodon that became extinct at the peak of the Ice Age was recently discovered. It contains a human-made projectile dissimilar to any found in that part of Eurasia closest to North America.Premises 2) Eurasians did not settle in North America until shortly before the peak of the Ice AgeConclusion the first Eurasian settlers in North America probably came from a more distant part of Eurasiatry to pre-phase: Weakens the argument: Prove that it was not Eurasian from distant who came first to settle in north america. Used POE: A) Projectile do not belong to any eurasian ( close or distant) ==> good. Lets see other points B) Out of scope (nomad..) C) Out of scope (bear..) D) Strengthens not weakens the argument E) Out of scope (climeatic conditions not relevant) Thanks for these questions, it seems time consuming. Wats the OA? How much time does LSAT gives for each question? Like In gmat it varies from 1.75 to 2.5 min depending on complexity.

OA is A. What does POE stand for? Lsat gives 35 minutes to answer around 24 CR questions, so its not THAT much time, but still doable.

A.
It took me time to understand the argument. Hence, I strongly leveraged the POE.
B. INCORRECT - no mention of the projectile C. INCORRECT - irrelevant - no connection to the mastodon D. INCORRECT - irrelevant information E. INCORRECT - irrelevant information

I will try to paraphrase the argument:
Evidence 1: skeleton found in north america, dated peak of ice age, contains certain projectile Evidence 2: projectile is not similar to the one found in the part of eurasia close to north america Evidence 3: eurasians migrated to north america just before peak of ice age Conclusion: projectile must have come from the farther part of eurasia
Assumption: that projectile can only come from eurasia and not from any other country
Answer A best weakens the assumption.

Hmm..This one's a toughie. Thanks for the explanations. I was also stuck between A and B but could not understand the choice A completely and marked B in 2 mins
