Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.
(A) to keep from
(B) to keep it from
(C) to avoid
(D) in order that it would avoid
(E) in order to keep from
Could someone tell me why B is right?
Do we need the pronoun it?
Why not a reflexive pronoun itself?
thank you

I would have chosen B.
'it' is required to refer to 'chalice'.
Look at it this way..
Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.
The one in blue just provides additional information and we can be done without it. In such case the remaining sentence in black would make no sense without 'it' - to refer to the subject chalice. Also, 'it' answers this question - bury what?

The last part of the sentence "was buried to keep from being stolen..." needs to have a subject.
The pronoun it introduces that subject and therefore makes the connect with the object of the sentence "Chalice" stronger.
Reflexive pronouns itself when introduced, would mean that the Chalice buried itself on its own and not because of some people/persons who might be reposnsible for burying it.

Thanks dushver and other buddies,
dushver, you mean that the intended sentence should be
"Someone buried the chalice to keept it from being stolen."
If we want to change into the passive tone, we can say "Chalice was buriesd to keep it from being stolen by someone, where "by someone" can be eliminated.
Hence, we use pronoun it ranther than reflexive pronoun itself, because the suject must be someone rather than chalice itself.
Right? thank you
