Are all 700s Equal? [#permalink]

Last night I took my first test to see where I'm at. GMATPrep Test 1. Q: 42 V: 41 Total: 690
My practice tests indicate I'm pretty well balanced between Q and V. My undergrad SAT scores painted a similar picture; 710 math and 690 verbal.
Tonight I'm going to review my mistakes and create a study plan. I'd like some input as to how I should allocate my time. Looking at the total population of test takers, the score distributions for Q and V are very different (i.e. Q scores are generally lower). Does this impact how I allocate my time in an effort to maximize my combined score? Would raising my V score by 4 points have a greater impact than raising my Q by 4 points? Vice versa?
Also, do admission committees look at all 700s, or 730s or 760s equally? Said another way, for 700+ score would an admissions committe prefer to see balanced scores (e.g. V: 43, Q: 43) or, a slightly higher Q or a higher V (I realize they don't like seeing a massive imbalance such as Q: 50, V: 37 but I don't think I have to worry about this)?

My short answer is no, not all 700s are weighed the same. Generally speaking, you want your Quant percentile to be higher than 80 (or as high as possible). If you have lobsided score, you'd want your quant to be higher. Most b-schools look at your quantitative ability much more strigently than your verbal score on GMAT. I think that one of the current students on Wharton's forum actually said that if your quant score is below the 75% mark, you should really consider either retaking the test or take some extra courses to show the Wharton AdCom that you have the ability to succeed in its heavy-quant based classes. As it's true for most schools, your quant score will be a bit more important than your verbal score. This is my take on it.

oh! and by the way, if you're at the 730 or 760 range, it really won't matter anymore (between quant and verbal) because both are guaranteed to be high. The imaginery threshold is 80 percentiles for both verbal and quant and at 730, I believe both would have to be over 80 percentiles.

I got a little worried at a Haas information session when the adcom rep said they're leery of Q scores below 80%, but I guess I was able to convince them that my undergrad courses demonstrated some good quant ability, and that my quant-braindead-ness was only because the Marine Corps hasn't really required me to do any math that I couldn't count on my fingers.

I have got to say that your verbal is such a killer score that I wouldn't worry about the quant score

Hass is one of the school that I really wanted to go. What exactly was you Q and V raw score? Also, after they accept you, when do you need to tell them your final decision?  Posted from GMAT ToolKit
