Hi i have come across some wired things from grammer website.
are these correct??

1.

The number of ----------------- singular

A number of -------------------- plural

2.

If both nouns mean the same and only one uses an article then the corresponding verb is singular

Example:
Bread and butter is ...

A friend and benefitor is no longer ....

3.

Native to
native of
Penguins are native to the Antarctic.
Steve is a native of Canada.

4.

prized as Stephen is prized as a teacher in Bogota.
prized for Stephen is prized for his ability to dance the salsa.

This is good.

For #2-- what you write is correct, and here's some other examples:

Peaches and cream is a tasty dessert.
Peaches and cream are always in my refrigerator.

Terrance and Phillip is my favorite show.
Terrance and Phillip are nice people.

All 4 are correct.

For #2, if the compound subject conveys a single meaning, it is treated as singular. Consider - The poet and philosopher <b>is</b> dead.

I will add to the list another one:
5. For neither/ nor, either/ or questions, the verb agrees with nor/ or. But if you have a singluar and plural subject joined by these constructs, you should always put the plular one closer to nor / or. For example,

The president and the senators were wrong.

is preferred over...

The senators and the president was wrong.
