Are top part-time programs worth it in my fiance's case? [#permalink] New post 07 Sep 2009, 19:42
My fiance is working full time as an internal auditor/tax accountant at a fortune 500 company. She really wants to go to a top part-time program (especially NYU), but the company will only reimburse 10k a year.

I'm wondering if there's really any benefit of paying out of pocket to make up the difference. Is there really any benefit (short term or long term) of going to NYU part-time and spending that money vs. going to a less expensive local school like University of Connecticut or Fordham and having most (if not all) of the expenses paid for?

Thanks guys!

I think it really depends on her career goals. If her goal is to stay within her organization or the industry, it might be sufficient to get her MBA at a local school. The advantage of the NYU part-time program vs. a lower ranked school is the network. Not just the network of alumni, but the network she will develop with other part-time students that probably hold more senior positions than the students at a local university.

Is that difference with the cost? It completely depends on what she wants out of the MBA.

Agree with Avernusaur, what are her career goals? I think going to NYU will definitely help if she is switching careers or needs that additional boost from the alumni network (not to mention name recognition with future employers). I am under the belief that if you are pursuing your MBA, you should try to get into the best school possible.
