Are x and y both positive?

1. 2x -2y = 1
2. x/y > 1

Please explain. Can any one give a strategy on how to solve this?

1 or 2 alone certainly is insufficient

Now 1 and 2 together:

(1) -> x-y= 1/2 -> x>y -> x-y>0
(2) <=> x/y-1>0 -> (x-y)/y > 0
because x-y >0 -> y> 0, x>y -> x>0

so 1 and 2 together are sufficient

some how I am not sure when I should substitute vs plug in numbers.. What is your take on it?
