(A) if it has been altered since completion and if Leonardo da Vinci first sketched the figure in black, as done
(B) if it had been altered since completion and if Leonardo da Vinci first sketched the figure in black, a practice employed
(C) whether it has been altered since completion and whether Leonardo da Vinci first sketched the figure in black, a practice employed
(D) whether it was altered since completion and whether Leonardo da Vinci first sketched the figure in black, as was done
(E) whether it had been altered since completion and whether Leonardo da Vinci first sketched the figure in black, a practice done

C for me.

a and b are wrong because of "if".

d is wrong because of "was". it should be present tense.

e is wrong because of "done". You don't do a practice, but employ it.

Its D for me.

whether is better than if so A and B are out. has been in C seems to indicate an event which has started in past and still going. E is out for the use of had been and the last part of sentence is incorrect.

I am for 'C'.

'D' is out because 'whether it was altered since completion' is a wrong construction. Typically 'since' is preceded by 'had been or has been' depending upon the time of action.

Thanks.

I will go with D, don't like "has been" in C and the "practice employed"

since has to be used with a present perfect tense to indicate that that the action is continued upto present day. Add me to the C list.

Agree .. please post OA.

I chose C last time as well and I still stick with it. The Alteration could NOT have happened BEFORE the completion; Using Simple Past Tense (Was altered since completion) does not make it clear which came first - the alteration or the completion.

Well I read somewhere GMAT prefers 'whether' over 'if' on situations like that...

So, A & B out...

C is good.
