this is a subjunctive mood question.

the subjunction mood here is "past subjunctive" and is formed by putting the verb form "to be" + participle i.e "were invested" in this question

awkward..wordy with 'would have been'
B. have been generated if a portion of the capital would have been
awkward..wordy with 'would have been'

Correct answer..were is correctly used to indicate supposition
D. be generated if a portion of the capital was
supposition has to be expressed here..was is not the correct usage.
E. be generated if a portion of the capital had been
not correct
