In general, I find EIU's list to be interesting. I think that IESE deserves great credit for the business school that it is regardless of whether it is #1 or #20 on the league tables. Much to the school's credit, ethics has long been an integral part of the school's mission, not just some sort of faddish "post Enron" thing that lasts a few years.
It is tempting to read a number of motives into the actions of Penn/W and Harvard. After all, it is rather convenient how Penn decided to withdraw from the rankings after what I believe was its lowest showing ever in BusinessWeek. Since both schools are widely recognized as being components of the top group, high rankings only confirm what people already know and low rankings risk making the schools look relatively weak. Thus, the safe route is to make a sanctimonious withdrawal from the rankings citing excessive demands on the time of staff, privacy issues, and "rankings mania" to justify leaving the evaluation system.
