Youi cant use 'children' as the sentence ends with old age. so we need childhood.
only B and D.
D is very awkward written.

THAT should not be used to modify people. So we eliminate (A) and (C)

(B), (D) and (E) are almost the same except for concision
IN CHILDHOOD = WHEN THEY WERE CHILDREN
AT ONE TIME = ONCE

(B) contains the concise choices "in childhood" and "once", So this kills (D) and (E)

Answer: (B)
