D is out because of the usage of like
E conveys the meaning in the best way

What if "D" was like this "D) The rarer something becomes, such as"....why "like" is not valid here ?

I think it is E also
D is wrong even if like was there as a replacement because it poses itself as providing examples
but whether provides the either this or that analysis
to use like we would have
the rarer things like baseball cards.... become

I think the paranthetical element should represent something in whole. The sentence is not illustrating any example (such as) or similarity.

Reasoning: THe idea to be conveyed is " Whatever be the commodity, if its rare....".
'LIKE' or "SUCH AS" suggest that the baseball card is definitely a rare thing, where as the intended meaning is "anything that becomes rare"

I initially mistake for 'become like....'
I think we need use 'such as' to take an example. That is, some rare thing such as a baseball card or a musical recording or a postage stamp.
