As you can tell I'm new here so I hope that my post conforms to the accepted practice around here. Long story short, I know that SC is my biggest weakness on the GMAT so I've been diligently working on improving that area. I've started to compile a list of questions I've missed with the hope that people on here might be able to show me why my answers were wrong. Thanks so much for your help in advance!

1. Mideast immigrant’s rates of entrepreneurship exceed virtually every other immigrant group in the increasingly diverse United States economy.

A) Mideast immigrant’s rates of entrepreneurship exceed
B) Mideast immigrants are exhibiting rates of entrepreneurship exceeding
C) Immigrants from the Mideast exhibit rates of entrepreneurship exceeding those of
D) The rates of entrepreneurship in immigrants from the Mideast exceed
E) The rates of Mideast immigrants’ entrepreneurship exceed those of

My Answer = E, Correct Answer = C

2. The largest trade-book publisher in the United States has announced the creation of a new digital imprint division, under which it will publish about 20 purely digital works to be sold online as either electronic books or downloadable copies that can be printed upon purchase.

A) Works to be sold online as either electronic books or
B) Works to sell them online, either as electronic books or
C) Works and it will sell them online as either electronic books or as
D) Works, and selling them online as either electronic books or as
E) Works, and it will sell them online either as electronic books or

My answer = E, Correct Answer = A

Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for such a quick a detailed reply, it was more than I hoped for! I do have follow up questions just to make sure I understand!

Questions about #1

You eliminated A, B & D initially because they lack the clause "those of" correct?

You wrote:

This Q test ||ism. Rates of X exceed those of Y
||ism for rates leaves us with choice of C and E.
||ism of X and Y makes C correct.
In E
X= Mideast immigrant's enterpreneurship
Y= Every other immigrant group
Here X and Y are not ||

So X in C = enterpreneruship and Y = Every other immigrant group? How is that different from E?

Questions about #2

Pretty sure I got the concept here but when you have either the X and Y should be in the same form so answers in the form of:

either as X or as Y
as either X or Y

are both ||, correct?

Thanks again!

I have a doubt here guys...

"Those of" preceeding "virtually" it doesn't sound correct to me. Is it correct? can anyone explain.

Second was straight and simple. "to be sold" sounds perferct for the verb "will".

After reading the question I was certain that E is the correct answer. Both in C and E, rates are being compared.

But everyone was keep on saying C is the correct answer. But I was able to understand how. Then I searched on google and found out that the choice E here in the question has a typo. The correct choice as listed in GAMT prep is -

E) The rates of Mideast immigrants’ entrepreneurship exceeds those of

This subject verb agreement error in E, rules out E. That is why C is correct.

Link to correct question.

In my experience with GMAT, most of the time (not always) choices with apostrophe are wrong.

A. Comparing rates with groups.
B. bad comparison.
C Correct.
D. Same problem as A.
E. Just a bad formulation.

A. CORRECT.
B. Missing ‘as’ before downloadable copies. ‘Sell them online’ is awkard.
C. Bad pronoun ‘it’ as it could refer to ‘publisher’ or the ‘division’.
D. Extra ‘as’ at the end. Plus the ‘and selling them online’ is awkard.
E. Same problem as C.

I dont thing that "it" in E is ambigous.
I think that it clearly refers to the subject publisher. Actually there is another "it" in the sentence that refers to publisher so the whole thing is consistent.

Thoughts on that?
Thanks.

In E:

The rates of Mideast immigrants’ entrepreneurship exceed those of...virtually every other immigrant group in the increasingly diverse United States economy.

Which is:

The rates of Mideast immigrants’ entrepreneurship exceed the rates of Mideast immigrants’ entrepreneurship of virtually every other immigrant group in the increasingly diverse United States economy.

Which makes no sense.

Thoughts on that?

Yeah, the meaning becomes distorted when the subject changes from [immigrants] to [the rate(s)]
