The Teach For India Fellowship is a nationwide movement of outstanding college graduates and young professionals who teach full-time for two years in under-resourced schools, and become lifelong leaders working towards equity in education. TFI is currently in its fourth year of operations. From a cohort of 87 Fellows who joined us in 2009, we now have over 500 Fellows teaching in low income schools around Bombay, Delhi, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad.
The
short term theory of change includes the
Fellowship - Teach For India recruits India's most promising college graduates and high performing young professionals to serve as full-time teachers in low-income schools for two years. Fellows work tirelessly to bridge the immense gaps their children face, putting their students on a fundamentally different life path. Through the Teaching as Leadership framework, Teach For India staff provide training and support to Fellows so that they can employ innovative teaching strategies to maximize their effectiveness in the classroom.
The long term theory of change includes the
Alumni Movement - After two years of the Fellowship, the Fellows are then inducted into our Alumni Movement. The Alumni are the forerunners of our movement and are instrumental in helping us reach our vision. The Alumni are a powerful and growing leadership force. Informed by their experiences and insights, the Alumni Movement works from inside and outside the educational system to effect the fundamental, long-term changes necessary to ultimately realize educational opportunity for all.
Our Fellows: Teach For India Fellows come from institutions like IIT, IIM, Columbia, ISB, St. Stephen's, St. Xavier's, Harvard and Princeton and from corporations such as McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, HDFC, Accenture, Thermax, ICICI and Godrej Industries.
Fellow satisfaction: “During my two years with Teach For India, I learned that belief in a vision and a positive attitude go a long way in making the seemingly impossible a reality. I saw first-hand the impact I had on each student led to a changed classroom and eventually a transformed school. I now tackle the complexities of scaling excellence across systems, working closely with government schools, NGOs.” - Sana Gabula, a 2009 Fellow from GE.
Our impact: Today, we impact 22,978 children and 730 Fellows across 5 cities. Currently our alumni strength is 431. Our children have shown a growth of 1.2 school years in just 1 year in their writing skills, and have doubled in their reading fluency! Parallel to their work in the classrooms, our Fellows undertake a community project which addresses barriers to student achievement outside of the classroom. They have also met with leaders such as Hilary Clinton, Professor Yunus, Dr. Abdul Kalam, Geet Sethi, Sachin Tendulkar, Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, Kajol, Rahul Bose in support of the movement!
