I am from pakistan and have done a two years bachelors in Computer Science, followed immediately by a two year MBA. Therefore I wanted to ask if my MBA degree will disqualify me from the admission process at tepper.
I will like to point out here that in Pakistan 16 years of education can be completed through two routes, i.e. either by doing a four years bachelors degree ( usually engineering) or by doing a two year bachelors followed by a two year masters ( my case). Therefore my education is equal to 16 years according to US and UK standards. However a few admission consultants have put my chances of getting into a top US MBA programme at zero based on the MBA degree that i have done. Whereas i was under the impression that although the name of my degree is MBA however it is more of a BBA degree according to US standards.
Your input will be appreciated. Hi msikander, Thanks for the post, and my apologies in the delayed reply. That's a very difficult question. We do have candidates from time-to-time who apply already holding an MBA or a degree that is similar to an MBA. While it's not an automatic deny, I will say that it is indeed difficult to gain admission. I would advise that you want to be extremely clear in the essays of your intention (i.e what specifically you hope to gain with this degree that wasn't previously available to you) and, in your case, the particular details of your previous masters degree. Likely this could be thoroughly addressed in the optional essay. Hope this is slightly helpful. You can feel free to email me at jfrick@andrew.cmu.edu if I might be able to be of additional assistance. Best, James

Thanks Amit Hi Amit, Thanks for the post. Glad to hear of your interest in the FlexTime program. There is only one start date each year which, as you mentioned, is in late August. Let me know if I can help with additional questions or introduce you to some of our current FlexTime students. Best, James

Hi Tepper MBA,
I am interested in applying to the MBA program. I have a concern regarding how my GPA will be viewed by the admission committee. I did my undergrad in India where I had a GPA of 6.1/10 i.e 61% which given the academic rigour of my program roughly translates into a 3.0 US GPA.
After that I graduated from the Master of Engineering Management program at Case Western Reserve University where I had a GPA of 3.8/4
So I wish to know how for admissions purpose will my GPA be viewed?

We have quite a bit of experience working with candidates whose programs do not have a 4.0 scale. You will be able to provide your rank and measure rather than needing to run a conversion. You are also more than welcome to address the competitiveness of your program in your optional essay. Again, keep in mind that our committee is quite familiar with most universities. Finally, in doing so, you can point to your very strong MS degree to help mitigate any concerns you feel the committee might have in reviewing your academic credentials. Hope this is helpful. Good luck to you with the application. Best, James

Hi James,
I am interested in Tepper MBA program ( i have a strong interest in Pittsburgh !! ) and will apply in Round 3. Could you help advise me ?
1. Will there be fewer opportunities for an international candidate to be admitted in Round 3 ? How about the opportunities for scholarships ? 2. As for the Essay B and Essay C, is it ok if i use stories in my professional life for both 2 essays ?
Thank you in advance and i look forward to your response.

Thank you in advance and i look forward to your response. Thank you for the post! Glad to hear that you are interested in Pittsburgh as well. It's a great city - amazingly, it's nearly 50 degrees today. Happy to help with your questions as best I can. 1) Not usually. Each year is of course a bit different, but in my experiences as strong application and good fit is an admit, whether submitted in round 1 or 3. I tend to advise that it's much better to wait until your application is at its strongest rather than rushing to meet an earlier deadline. 2) That would be just fine. Essay D will ask for an example that is outside of work or your studies. Hope this is helpful. Good luck on the application! Best, James

Thanks and regards, Siddharth Hi Siddharth, Thank you for the post. It is not viewed as a negative in any way should a candidate opt to take the GMAT more than once. We will simply take your best overall score. Hope this is helpful. Best, James
