E is correct.

C and D are out because of an extra "that". It will sound like "one that they believe that..."

A - one that astronomers believe is of a type previously unknown to science. Now it is correct. But there is no such choice.
B - "it" is ambigious in this. Refering to "Palomar Observatory" or "supernova explosion".

Another vote for E

the ans does not need a 'THAT' and must have a 'OF' at the end which are both present in E

Sorry guys, but I do not see anything wrong with 'A'. I think E is just a passive form of A, so shouldn't we prefer A?

I will go with 'A'. I do not see anything wrong with that option.

I would go with E. Here is the reasoning

Astronomers at the Palomar Observatory have discovered a distant supernova explosion, one that they believe is a type previously unknown to science.

(A) that they believe is
Here it sounds like supernova explosion is a type.It should be"supernova explosion is of a type"..Comparison error
(B) that they believe it to be
Pronoun error
(C) they believe that it is of
pronoun error(it)
(D) they believe that is
sounds awkward
(E) they believe to be of
Correct

Hi Andy_gr8,

I am confused.
How did you fingure out that there is a pronoun error in C?
I think 'it' is refering to 'one' i.e supernova explosion.

Please explain.

'E' it is.

All except 'C' & 'E' are out since we need 'of' before type.

We are talking "something of type X"

'C' is out because, "believe to be" is correct usage.

"to be of" is an all time favorite SC tested pattern.

Does "that" in choices A, B, and C introduce a restrictive clause? Isn't this frowned upon by GMAT?

Thanks!
