At a certain pet shop, 1/3 of the pets are dogs and 1/5 of the pets are birds. How many of the pets are dogs?

1)there are 30 birds in the shop
2)there are 20 more birds than dogs in the shop

The answer is E, but I put D because I think to myself....are there other types of animals in the shop? If so, they are unknown....so, I can't solve it. Why am I wrong?

first i was a little bit confused...
I thought it's D, but it looked to simple
the trick is the statement in the problem tells us that there are more dogs in the store than birds 1/3>1/5 so statement 2 is not sufficient (it's controversial)
statement 1 is sufficient we can find the total number of pets. 150 and the number of dogs 150/3=50

Am I missing something?

the answer is (D)

1/3 dogs = 5/15

1/5 birds = 3/15

statement 1

there are 30 birds in the shop

so 30*15/3 = 150 total animals

150*5/15 = 50 dogs

sufficient

statement 2

there are 20 more birds ??? than dogs ??? in the shop (see sergey post)

x = dogs = 5/15

x+20 = birds = 3/15

5/15-3/15 = 2/15

20*15/2= 150 total animals

150*5/15 = 50 dogs

you are correct , the statements are contradicting each other!!!

so unless the problem is presented wrong the answer is (E)

whenever both statements contradict each other i always put (E) !
