1) At a certain university, if 50 percent of the people who inquire about admission policies actually submit applications for admission, what percent of those who submit applications for admission enroll in classes at the university? (1) Fifteen percent of those who submit applications for admission are accepted at the university. (2) Eighty percent of those who are accepted send a deposit to the university.
Let us say that N people inquire about the admission policies. So N/2 people actually submitt the application.
(1) Accpeted number of people = 0.15(N/2). This does not tell anything about the number pf people enrolling for the classes. (Accepted student does not necessarily will enroll in the classes. Student may choose to deffer the admission or may choose to attend another universiy)
(2) In this statment we do not knoe how many people have been accepted. So number of people who sends the deposits can not be known
Together : Accepted people = 0.15(N/2)
Sending deposit = 0.8 (0.15) (N/2)
Even in this case we can not say how many people actually enrolled for classes at the university. (Sending deposit does not make it necessary that the people will enroll in the class. correct?)
