At store W, in June of year X, the price of a cabinet was 20 percent less than it was in July of year X, and at store W, in June of year X, the price of a lamp was 15 percent greater than it was in July of year X. What was the price of the lamp in store W, in June of year X?

The price of the cabinet in June = 0.8C;
The price of the cabinet in July = C;

The price of the lamp in June = 1.15L;
The price of the lamp in July = L;

(1) In July of year X, the price of the cabinet was $260 greater than the price of the lamp --> C=L+260. Not sufficient to find L.

(2) The ratio of the price of the cabinet in June of year X to the price of the cabinet in July of year X was 4 to 5 --> we knew this from the stem, since (0.8C)/C=0.8=4/5, so this statement is useless. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) One statement is insufficient and another is useless, thus even taken together the statements are not sufficient.

Answer: E.

Hope it's clear.

Statement 1 and 2 are insufficient of itself......I hope thats easy and you may hove no doubt in that

Combining both statement gives
C-L = 260 and 0.8C/C = 4/5
You can noot calcualte the value of C from the proprotion......because c will be cancelled and you will be left out with 0.8 =4/5
had it been 0.8l/c =4/5
than there would have been possible soln....

Consider kudos if my post helps!!

clearly answer is E.

No relation is mentioned in question between lamp and cabinet.
and nothing about lamp is in any of the statement.
