(A) At the invitation of
> Idiomatic.

(B) When he was invited by
> sounds like he received invitation, settled in gharla, and became the editor at the same time.

(C) An invitation coming from
> No reason to use a participle.

(D) An invitation that came from
> Doesn't make a complete sentence.

(E) After having an invitation by
-> "invitation by" is unidiomatic.

Thus, my guess is (A).

I picked A. This was a hard one for me. I immediatly noticed that this was a modifier test. I eliminated C and D right away because neither reference W.B. Bois. OUt of the remaining choices A seems the most idiomaticly correct to me.

A here as well.

C and D make the modifier incorrect. DuBois isn't an invitation.

B incorrectly uses when

E is awkward.
