As many of you think about MBA applications you will submit within the next few months or in Round 1, I thought I would post some advice about common mistakes you should try to avoid in your MBA essays and applications. In this post, let’s focus on this:

Failing to understand the importance of MBA letters of recommendation.

This is a broad problem for all candidates, regardless of their background. Many candidates do not realize that the recommendations are as influential in determining admissions success or failure as the MBA essays. You can have a wonderful application in every other way (essays, GMAT score, GPA, resume, app form), but if the recommendations are mediocre or flat, this can close the door for an interview and admissions for you.

For East Asian and Indian applicants in particular, as well as candidates from other highly competitive profiles such as investment bankers, the recommendations don’t even need to be “bad”, as such. Given how highly competitive certain pools are, a recommendation that is simply lukewarm or bland in its endorsement can derail an application, resulting in rejection. In the case of the top-5 MBA programs, the admissions committees want to hear that you are the best in your professional world. If any one of your recommendation writers indicates that you are not the best—just “second best” or “fairly good”—the admissions committee may conclude that there is no compelling case for your admission.

Take the time to make sure you secure recommendations from writers who will be very enthusiastic about you, your successes and your potential. This can make a huge difference in your admission outcomes.
