B school rankings .... what is it? [#permalink] New post 01 Jan 2010, 12:20
There are 100 thousand different parties putting up different ranking list for B schools. When people say M7 or top 20 .. what list are they exactly refering to .. is there a widely famous or most weighted ranking list? if so .. can somebody point me to that.

M7 is the collection of top B-schools whose deans meet every so often to discuss their curricula and the future of MBA education. The term is coined by CBS's dean. The M7 schools are:
-HBS
-Wharton
-Columbia
-Kellogg
-Chicago
-Stanford
-MIT Sloan

Top 20/Top 15 is a bit murky. It usually refers to the US News rankings, but more or less historical prestige. For this reason Yale is usually considered a top 15 (ranked 24 in BW), and Texas-McCombs is considered Top 20 (ranked 21 in BW).
In general Top 20 schools are:
- Harvard University
- University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
- Stanford University
- Northwestern University (Kellogg)
- University of Chicago (Booth)
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)
- Dartmouth College (Tuck)
- Columbia University
- Duke University (Fuqua)
- Yale University
- University of California - Berkeley (Haas)
- Cornell University (Johnson)
- University of Michigan (Ross)
- New York University (Stern)
- University of California - Los Angeles (Anderson)
- University of Virginia (Darden)
- University of Texas - Austin (McCombs)
- Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper)
- University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler)

There are several different rankings and they have different top schools depending on the criteria they use. I actually just published a special report on the MBA Rankings.

It addresses several of your questions.

Best,
