B schools to apply for a gmat score of 510 [#permalink] New post 19 Dec 2010, 00:09
My gmat score for 2010 is 510. I am a software engineer with 3+ years of experience. I have a Btech in Computer Science.

Can you please share your knowledge and help me decide which B schools i should/can apply for, specially considering my low gmat score.

First, you should retake the GMAT if you have the time and resources. But if you can't, here's a few I noticed in US News:

Florida State
College of Charleston
Baylor
Iowa State
Cincinnati

You'd be a little below the 10th percentile GMAT for these schools, but they are reporting very, very strong job placement at graduation. It'd be worth a shot at applying to a few.

With no idea what you want to do, or what region of the country you want to be in, it's hard to say much about schools. You should either focus on schools with strong job placement or spend a lot of time networking on your own. I'd hate to spend money going to school and not have a job offer. : (

Hi ,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Let me give more on what I am looking for. I am from India.
I have taken GMAT exam on 13th dec 2010 and if I wish to retake it, I wont be able to untill 13 jan (one month).

And also its a risk, if I score good then fine else they will take average and it will become low.

I will probably miss the deadlines.

Do you have any idea like how is A&M texas: Mays business school.

What you suggest should I retake GMAT, do I have time...or i will miss deadlines :(

Please reply.

Thanks again.

Most US MBA programs will look at your highest GMAT score and not average them. You could try applying as is, and then sending in your new GMAT score when you get it back. You should be able to do this before an interview invite decision is made.

If you improve your GMAT score, great! If your score doesn't change substantially, however, you really need to think about what part of the country you want to be in. At this level, local and regional school ties will matter a lot.

I'd also recommend retaking the GMAT at least once. If anything, narrow down on if it's your quant score or verbal that's killing you. Whichever it is, take some CC courses to prove you can do it. This will hopefully counter the lower score and at least show to adcoms your effort.

Definitely retake the GMAT. Coming from India puts you at a disadvantage of 25-100 GMAT points at many schools, so when screening schools in the US look for schools that have an average GMAT of 25-100 points below yours.
