I was undecided between A and E. Why is E more correct than A?

Whats wrong with A?

'Based on' is not idiomatic here.

A says "Based on accounts of various ancient writers, scholars..". This is a wrong modifier. We need after the comma "the thing that is based on accounts of various ancient writers", not "scholars".

The answer should be ^ E ^

If A had to be right, it should have been - Based on accounts, sketches have been made by scholars.

E correctly says that scholars have used.
Using accounts, scholars have sketched.

The scholars themselves are not "based on the accounts...", therefore A is out for the wrong modifier.

(E) reads just fine..
