Based on accounts of various ancient writers, scholars have painted a sketchy picture of the activities of an all-female cult that, perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., worshipped a goddess known in Latin as Bona Dea, “the good goddess.” (A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers, (B) Basing it on various ancient writers’ accounts, (C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis, (D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used, (E) Using accounts of various ancient writers,

Based on accounts of various ancient writers, scholars have painted a sketchy picture of the activities of an all-female cult that, perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., worshipped a goddess known in Latin as Bona Dea, “the good goddess.” (A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers, (B) Basing it on various ancient writers’ accounts, (C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis, (D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used, (E) Using accounts of various ancient writers, E is a good choice. The clause which begins the sentence must precede a subject that is a logical recipient of the clause's action. In this case, A is a bit of a trap answer. Most native English speakers will use this construction in every day speech. However, it is not grammatical. "Based on accounts of various ancient writers" is followed by the noun "scholars". It would not be logical to literally base accounts on scholars. The "it" in B has no logical antecedent. C is awkward and a bit wordy. "They" in D is ambiguous. It is not clear if it refers to accounts or writers. E is correct because the noun which follows the opening clause is a logical recipient of the clause's action. In other words, the scholars used accounts of various ancient writers.

You need to find what that first phrase is modifying. The easiest way to find, if main clause is a person, then you have to ask yourself that "Scholar, based on~" it doesn't sound correct. Simply you can compare all of multiple choices in this way and then find out which fits the best. "E" Scholar is using accounts~ makes perfect sense. "B" is not idiom, "C" is wordy and "writers used for a basis" is modifying ancient. "D", whenever you see "They" or "it" you have to doubt question. Who are they? Therefore, the answer is "E"
