(A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers - 'scholars' were not based on the accounts of varioius ancient writers. Rather, scholars used the accounts of various writers.
(B) Basing it on various ancient writers’ accounts - awkward and does not modify 'scholars'
(C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis - awkward
(D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used - awkward construction
(E) Using accounts of various ancient writers - the modifier is corretly modifying 'scholars' which is placed immediately after the comma.

The scholars used accounts of various...They were not based on, basing it on, etc
