I don't see anything wrong w/ A.

Im stuck btwn C and A as well. I just guessed A.

B: changes the meaning of the sentence.
D: long awkward
E: correct idiom is "indicate that"<-- this is missing from E.

My thoughts are:

A & B - Cannot be used since Based on records - each year young Athenian women is wrong

E- is just awkward - "indicate each year"

Between C and D - would go for D because of //ism and also "new woolen robe with which" sounds right.

A - incorrect - misplaced modifier. 'Ahtens, young Athenian ' would have been more appropriate

B - incorrect - missing Antecedent in 'which to dress'. Use of 'they' after 'which' would have been better and also subject verb disagree

C - same as 'A' - incorrect

D - Seems correct

E- each year in 'Athens indicate each year ' is dangling. Also 'to weave' is not parallel with 'dressing'

GMAT prefers simplcity.. In the above example "simple past" can do the job..

C. According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress
Here "they" does not have a proper predecessor and could point to the Ancient records also, hence making it incorrect.

I would say that this is 600-700 level. The reason why C is wrong is the use of "that they used to dress", it sounds awkward ,while option "D" "the robe with which they dressed" is perfectly grammatically correct. Also , if you take a look at the non-underlined portion of the sentence you can spot " and that" . option D uses indicates that...... and that so it is parallel.

Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

Does the ver-ed modifier make sense?
Lets do this test.
Logically, Subject, modifier, rest of the sentence should make sense.
So each year young Athenian women,Based on records from ancient Athens, collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress - Doesn't make sense. Women is based on records.

(A) Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress - Incorrect
(B) Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which to dress - Incorrect
(C) According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress - Incorrect
that is wrong here. that is acting as a relative pronoun and that points to "robe". So it sounds as if it is robe that women used to dress.
(D) Records from ancient Athens indicate that each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which they dressed - Looks good.
(E) Records from ancient Athens indicate each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe for dressing - Incorrect

Records from ancient Athens indicate
Records -> Subject
Indicate -> verb
Where is the object? that is required..

[quote="alimad"]Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collarborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

A. Same

B. Based on records from ancient Athens, young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which to dress

C. According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress

D. Records from ancient Athens indicate that each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which they dressed

E. Records from ancient Athens indicate each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe for dressing

Hi E-GMAT,

My analysis of the sentence:
A. Based is incorrectly modifying "each year young Athenian".
A. Based is incorrectly modifying "each year young Athenian". "had" is not required as there is no need to point out the time difference of the two events.
C. I don't see any problem.
D. I cannot find any problem.I believe this is the most appropriate answer.
E. "indicate" that is missing . "had" is not required.

I have confused between C and D. Can you please check my analysis and let me know the approach to deal with such questions.

Thanks !!!

In this sentence non-underlined portion is holding the key hint to right option. I have highlighted the key below. One should try to understand the nature of highlighted portion and then compare it to the nature of parallel that clause in underlined part. Are they parallel ? No. in underlined part that they used is modifying noun rob, but in non-underlined part that this robe is presenting a independent idea; it is not modifying rob. Therefore we should look for a answer in which these natures are also parallel.

C may appear parallel ... ahha.. that.... and that.. parallel, but as mentioned above their function is not parallel and so they are not parallel.
In D nature of that ... and that... is same both stating an independent idea. both parts are logically parallel as well.

Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

A. Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress

Thanks Piyush. I think I made a silly mistake while reading the entire sentence. I did not pay much attention to the non-underlined part of this sentence. Point noted and will not be repeated. :-D

Thanks Again for the reply !!

Notice the opening modifier "Based on records from ancient Athens"
It is modifying women.
Now ask yourself... Are women based on the records from the ancient Athens?

NO, right?

Hence eliminate Option A and Option B.

Same applies to C.

Option D and E are left.

Consider option E.

Records from ancient Athens indicate (that) each year young----> that is missing.

Indicate is used to imply something... and in generally implied sentences contains that

And in addition to the above mentioned error... consider the structure of option E------Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe for dressing------ for dressing a statue changes the logical meaning...

Hence option D is correct.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

Verb-ed modifier always modifies the noun.
So based is modifying Young Athenian Women - means Young Athenian women are based on records -- This is clearly Wrong.
This clears out B as well.

Also notice 2nd That clause in non underline portion. This "that" must make sense with that in underline portion. Both That should modify same noun.

A. Same

B. Based on records from ancient Athens, young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which to dress - Wrong as described

C. According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress - Both "THAT" refers to robe and after second THAT this robe is mention , means 2nd THAT does not refer Robe. - So this is wrong choice.

D. Records from ancient Athens indicate that each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which they dressed - This is correct choice. Both THAT refers to indicates

E. Records from ancient Athens indicate each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe for dressing - Two subject verb pair means two clauses, which are connected without any connector.
