C, D and E are wrong. Between A and B I choose B because parallelism is not kept in A.

I think it is C based on the following two justifications.

1. Based on is more concise than on the basis of.
2. Like + example.

In GMAT world "such as" is used for example. Like is used for comparison.
So, A & B left.

B is my choice.

It's not that scientists themselves are based on something, but that they do the estimation on the basis of something.

Therefore, only (B) and (D) are possible choices.

Between (B) and (D), (B) is the correct answer as syamee_u explained.

Good explanation gamjatang. It's not that scientists themselves are based on something, but that they do the estimation on the basis of something.
and in the GMAT world such as mean for example.
OA is indeed B.
